  • A passerby intervened when a man was attacked by two dogs on Sturdee Rd, Manurewa.
  • Davinder Singh said the passerby was also bitten while helping his father.
  • Both men were treated at the scene by Hato Hone St John and are in moderate condition.

An Auckland man being held against a wall and attacked by two dogs was saved when a 70-year-old great-grandfather pulled his car over and used his jandal to fend off the vicious animals.

Davinder Singh, the son of the injured man, said his father was attacked by two dogs and bitten on his legs and hands.

Singh said Paul Dor猫, who also lives on the street, pulled over to help and he was also attacked.

鈥淗e was a big fearless guy so he punched and all that and took them off but they bit him on the elbow and on the hand.鈥

He told the Herald the man had a deep cut on his hand.

鈥淧olice came and the ambulance came as well.鈥

Dor猫 told the Herald when he spotted him the man was stuck.

鈥淎t first I was a bit confused, thinking are those dogs with him then I realised they weren鈥檛, that they were having a go at him.鈥

Dor猫 described the dogs as 鈥測oung, pure white bullmastiff types鈥.

鈥淚鈥檓 thinking if it鈥檚 a young kid [they had attacked], what sort of state they鈥檇 be in now if they were willing to take me on.鈥

Dor猫 said the dogs backed off when he raised a jandal above his head.

鈥淭hey turned and I was going after them at this stage, thinking I鈥檓 not backing down鈥 Best way to handle this is to attack them, and then they ran.鈥

He told the Herald they must have sense that, 鈥淭his guy鈥檚 a crazy idiot鈥.

Singh said a neighbour told them the dogs had been seen in the area before.

He said his father and the man who helped him are okay, but medical staff are checking them over.

A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John said the agency was notified of an animal-related incident at 11.32am today on Sturdee Rd, Manuerwa.

鈥淲e responded with two ambulances and one rapid response vehicle. Two patients, both in a moderate condition, were assessed and treated at the scene.鈥

Police confirmed staff had assisted.
