Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has slammed plans for a day of disruption launched by Te P膩ti M膩ori as 鈥渋llegal鈥.

Te P膩ti M膩ori is urging all M膩ori to go on strike on Thursday and participate in protest action across the country.

The Toit奴 Te Tiriti National Day of Action protesters will be participating in 鈥渃arkois鈥 which entails driving slowly across roadways to disrupt traffic flow at peak times.

Te P膩ti M膩ori encouraged all M膩ori to leave work and attend the h墨koi near their location.
Luxon will face questions from Te P膩ti M膩ori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer at the start of Question Time today as Te P膩ti M膩ori urge people to join the protest against the Government鈥檚 actions.

The Herald will live-stream Question Time at the top of this article.

Asked whether the calls for strike action on Budget Day as part of the nationwide activation were appropriate, Luxon said: 鈥淣o, that would be illegal.

鈥滻 think that is wrong 鈥 I think that is entirely wrong. Feel free to protest, that鈥檚 what we have weekends for. Te P膩ti M膩ori, they鈥檙e completely free to protest as long as it鈥檚 legal.

鈥滻t鈥檚 pretty clear what the rules are around strike action and I would suggest to you that鈥檚 not one of them.鈥

Meanwhile, Labour MP Peeni Henare said the protest action was unsurprising given actions the coalition Government had taken, such as disestablishing the M膩ori Health Authority.

鈥滻 don鈥檛 know why anybody would be surprised.鈥

Participating in the protest was 鈥渦p to each and every individual鈥, he said.

鈥滲ut let鈥檚 be honest that what鈥檚 being lost here ... backwards views on M膩ori policies are what causes this kind of hurt for people so they鈥檒l make their own choice whether or not they get out to support.鈥

Labour leader Chris Hipkins said any strike action needed to be within the confines of the law.

鈥滲ut if people want to engage in their right to free speech, of course I encourage them to do that but I encourage them to do that within the law.鈥

In Auckland, protesters will meet at locations near motorway on-ramps, north, south and west of the city at 6.30am.

Te P膩ti M膩ori shared on social media that this is a 鈥渞angatira revolution鈥.

鈥淲e are being attacked for being M膩ori,鈥 Te P膩ti M膩ori wrote.

Second day of disruption

Te P膩ti M膩ori protests brought peak-hour traffic to a standstill last December in a similar event also organised by Te P膩ti M膩ori.

Police say an estimated 300 cars joined the Auckland protest, which was 鈥減eaceful and the vast majority of groups dispersed relatively quickly鈥.

In Wellington, 1000 protesters gathered on Parliament grounds, where Te P膩ti M膩ori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer addressed the crowd.

The convoys gathered about 7am in several cities and at traffic pressure points including near Auckland鈥檚 Northern Motorway at the Palmers Albany Garden Centre, near the Upper Harbour Motorway on Brigham Creek and Hobsonville Rds, and near the Southern Motorway at BP Bombay.

Further south, the Waikato Expressway suffered a 3km backlog after being blocked by about 50 cars. This had a 鈥渟ignificant impact on traffic鈥, police said.

Hamilton, Whakat膩ne, Rotorua, Tokoroa, Taup艒 and Palmerston North also held gatherings of about 100 people each, with minimal disruption.
